The Department of Health and Kinesiology (DHK) is a growing and emerging community of faculty, staff and students in the College of Education and Human Development. The departmental mission is “To be a center of opportunity, access and excellence in Southwest Texas through interdisciplinary leadership in instruction, research, and service to promote quality of life.”

With over 1,000 major students, the DHK offers four undergraduate degrees and one minors degree in Health. It also offers a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Health and Kinesiology. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has recently granted the DHK permission for a Master’s Degree in Health and Kinesiology. We anticipate that the program will be inaugurated in Fall 2008. Currently the DHK offers over 90 undergraduate classes each semester, and has five research/teaching laboratories/clinics.

The DHK has tripled its faculty over the past five years with 12 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 4 term-tenure faculty. The faculty expertise include community health, school health, nutrition, exercise physiology, exercise and sport psychology, pedagogy, adaptive/developmental physical education, biomechanics, motor learning and control, and evaluation and assessment.

The faculty in DHK has developed a vigorous research agenda focusing on prevention and treatment of risks for diseases and promotion of healthy growth and living across lifespan. Many of the research programs have been supported by external funding agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, the US Department of Education, and the International Life Science Institute Research Foundation. Close research collaborations have been formed with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, the Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX, local school districts and community groups.

The DHK is committed to serve the students and community and to address many of the challenges facing South Texas and beyond.
